Les Tres Riches Heures (4): April

This is the second month (see March) with an identifiable building in it. In this case the Château de Dourdan, which the Duc de Berry got his hands on in 1385. It’s still standing. The actual scene is thought to represent typical courtly behaviour. On the left a couple are getting engaged, and the speculation includes the possibility that this is the middle aged Duke, in the red hat, with his (12 year old) second wife, Jeanne de Boulogne. The two ladies on the right are doing the traditional April thing of picking spring flowers. These days the village adjacent to the chateau has got a bit bigger…
