Les Tres Riches Heures (3): March

A nicely pastoral scene, similar to that which is about to unfold in the fields around where I live. The timeless quality is one of the reasons why I love Les Tres Riches Heures. It’s the 600th anniversary of the death of the Duc de Berry this year. The picture shows his favourite chateau (Lusignan) at its peak. Below is what it looks like now. The painting itself is a nice example of formal structure in early painting, it’s basically a giant ‘X’ between two approximate rectangles.
