Great landscapes: Schinkel

Some people may find this a bit cheesy (or Lord of the Rings, as a sniffy friend claimed), but to me it’s a great piece of German romantic art. Berlin is full of this kind of thing. Schinkel was primarily a brilliant architect, but his paintings are technically superb, and remarkably atmospheric, in the best tradition of Caspar David Friedrich, Carl Gustav Carus and Carl Blechen. The relatively small Alte Nationalgalerie is a wonderful place for fans of these painters.
