Rights are wrongs

Get out your time machine and go back 10, 15, 20 years. Would it have been possible then to conceive of a case like that of Aso Mohammed Ibrahim? A child killer and career criminal who is protected by the awful Human Rights Act. which received Royal Assent on 9 November 1998.

No politician with half a brain would have conceded an outcome like that of Ibrahim, yet that is where we stand. The dead girl’s father, Paul Houston, eloquently and fairly argued his case on Radio 4’s PM programme yesterday. You don’t have to be a stereotypical Daily Mail reader to agree with its summation of the case today.

This act and its attendant lunatic judgements is a time bomb for Dave. Conversely, a repeal of the act would be wildly popular outwith the world of bien pensant London. Has he got the balls?

To quote the pre-election Dave:

“We ought to abolish the Human Rights Act and replace it with a British Bill of Rights that we can write ourselves that sets out clearly our rights and responsibilities.”

NB: Simon Heffer points out that Dave’s go slow on this is because of his commitments to Nick and the Lib Demz, who appear to revere the HRA.  This one won’t go away.
