To The Knife’s amazement, the dress rehearsal for today’s nonsensical events was spotted 9 years ago, by the brilliant Frank Johnson in his parliamentary sketch of 25th January 2001:
“….Mr Mandelson insisted on coming to the Commons to answer Northern Ireland questions, as planned before his resignation. Knowing him, it was at first assumed that he intended to become the first minister in history to resign while retaining his job.
He rose to a surprising cheer from the party to whose destruction he had dedicated his career (Labour). It would not have cheered had there been any danger of him remaining in office..”
And indeed, to demonstrate that there are a few Labour worthies who retain a semblance of respect for the electorate, John Reid and David Blunkett certainly failed to cheer Gordon, Mandy and Alastair’s antics today…
