Ash Wednesday

"Ash Wednesday" by Carl Spitzweg

Spitzweg is not really well known outwith Mitteleuropa. He is sometimes characterised as a slightly kitschy Biedermeier painter, but his best works, like this one, can be extraordinarily atmospheric and evocative. He died in 1885. Carnival is over.
